Grades 4 to 9 young historians in the Strait Region are busy preparing, fine-tuning and presenting their projects at local school fairs. Winners of the school fairs will compete at the upcoming Strait Regional Heritage Fair scheduled for Thursday, May 22, 2025, which will be a hybrid model of students presenting projects both in-person and virtually.

Open House

The public is invited to an open house to view projects from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, 2025, in the cafeteria at the Nova Scotia Community College, Strait Area Campus.

SRCE Heritage Fair Awards Ceremony

The in-person Heritage Fair Awards Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. in the SAERC Auditorium.

Approximately 85 students will present their projects at this year's event. Up to eight (8) students will be chosen to continue on to the Provincial Heritage Fair scheduled for Friday, June 13, 2025, at St. Mary’s University in Halifax.

Strait Regional Heritage Fair Planning Committee Coordinator Tera Dorrington explains that the Fair is designed to encourage youth to explore local and Canadian culture and heritage. "The Heritage Fair is a reflection of the many celebrations of heritage proudly shared throughout our region. It is an important opportunity to identify and promote the diverse cultures interwoven in our school communities,” said Ms. Dorrington.

Participation in the Heritage Fair provides students with an excellent educational opportunity, one in which they enhance their research, writing, presentation and public speaking skills. It also provides them with a sense of accomplishment while learning more about their heritage and culture.

The Strait Regional Heritage Fair Committee would like to thank the students for their dedication to participating in the event, the teachers for their exceptional efforts in helping students develop top-quality projects, and the parents/guardians for supporting their children as they prepare their projects.

The projects will be judged on strong historical/heritage component, written documentation to prove historical research, presentation, creativity and quality. There are four project aims. They are to:

- encourage all Canadians to celebrate their part in Canada’s history;
- heighten awareness of our Canadian heritage;
- create an exciting learning environment for students; and
- promote and publicize the variety and uniqueness of our Canadian heritage.

Prizes will be awarded at each grade level and participation certificates granted. In addition, awards will be presented in the following project categories of Acadian Heritage, African Canadian Heritage, Agriculture, Fisheries and Aquaculture, First Nations Heritage, Gaelic Heritage, Immigration Studies, Literacy and Veterans.

The Strait Regional Centre for Education would like to thank Heritage Fair Committee members, Tera Dorrington, Tracy MacIsaac, Lisa DeCoste, Scott Goyetche, Jennifer Desmond, Brian van den Heuvel and Laurie Baccardax for their outstanding leadership and dedication to providing students with an excellent educational opportunity. The Heritage Fair is truly a national event that inspires lasting memories, new friendships and experiences that will strengthen students’ connections to the history of Canada.
