Cancellations

Occasionally, weather/road conditions and physical plant issues may impact school bus service and school operations.

The safety of students and staff is the primary consideration in the decision to delay or cancel bus service or classes in a school(s). It is a decision that is taken very seriously and is made with the safety of students and staff as the first priority.

Parents/Guardians

The SRCE uses SchoolMessenger (PowerSchool) to communicate class-related notices (class cancellations/delayed openings/early dismissals/system shutdowns) impacting their student’s school to parents and guardians via email.

Parents and guardians may also choose to receive the notice by text message if you have opted-in. If you are not sure if you have opted in, text Y to the following number: 978338. Message and data rates may apply; and message frequency varies. You can always opt out in the future by replying to a text message with STOP. If you do not opt in, you will not receive any text messages from your child's school or the SRCE.

Parents and guardians are asked to please ensure their current contact information (email address and cell phone number) is up to date at their student’s school.

SchoolMessenger App

• Parents/guardians may also receive these notices through the SchoolMessenger app which is available free in your app store.

How can I be prepared for cancellations or delays?

Weather in Nova Scotia is unpredictable and can change with little notice. To minimize confusion, make sure you have developed a plan, and discussed it with your child.

Things to consider:

• Do you have a back up plan for childcare if schools are closed or delayed in opening?
• Does your child know where they are to go if school is cancelled early?
• Is your child always dressed properly for the weather conditions, regardless of whether they travel by bus or walks to school?
Please remember: As a parent or guardian, you always have the choice of whether or not to send your student to school.
