Many Scottish settlers, found a home in "New Scotland" between 1750 – 1860 and the Strait Regional Centre for Education serves part of the Province that has been referred to as the "Highland Heart of Nova Scotia."
For years, the language and culture survived in the area, most specifically in Antigonish and Inverness County. In the 1970's, Gaelic Language became a program of study in schools in Inverness County and has since been offered in Antigonish schools. Currently, eight schools in our Region offer Core Gaelic Language from Grade 3-12; Antigonish Education Centre, Bayview Education Centre, Dalbrae Academy, Dr. J.H. Gillis Regional High School, H.M. MacDonald Elementary School, St. Andrew Junior School, St. Andrews Consolidated School, and Whycocomagh Education Centre. Our Region boasts the largest Core Gaelic language offering outside of Scotland!
Well supported by Gaelic Affairs, Nova Scotia; The Gaelic Council of Nova Scotia; The Celtic Studies Department at St. Francis Xavier University; and the Nova Scotia Museum, our students enjoy opportunities to learn the language, dance, musicianship, and arts in school. They access the living culture within their homes and communities. Our partners include, but are not limited to The Highland Village Museum, An Drochaid (Mabou Gaelic and Historical Society) and The Beaton Institute, Cape Breton University.
