Newcomer students and English Language Learners benefit greatly from the classroom, small group, and individual support provided by our English as an Additional Language (EAL) Teachers.

Our EAL teachers provide supports to students in:

  • assisting with basic instructions and rules needed at school;
  • assisting with academic language from various courses;
  • assisting with front loading vocabulary for an upcoming unit;
  • providing tips and strategies like using a mic in Google docs to write for students, translating material;
  • assisting in downloading appropriate Apps onto a device for use in the classroom and/or at home;
  • practicing and learning new vocabulary with apps, games, small group work, to name a few;
  • helping with reading comprehension and writing skills; and
  • assisting with test-taking, paraphrasing notes, stories and textbook information, viewing videos from class and discussing content.

Our EAL teachers provide supports for teachers in:

  • the implementation of language-based centres and activities in your classroom;
  • creating visuals for current activities;
  • locating or creating materials for English Language Learners (ELLs) to complement current units in class; and
  • offering tips and strategies to use when working with English Language Learning students.
